Golf – Hit the Ball Out the Damn Bunker!

So your bunker play sucks and you want to do something about it.

Well, its not easy but here’s a rough guide to get you started. There are basically two kinds of greenside bunker shops and they depend on how your golf ball is lying.

The first situation is a good lie where the ball sits up nicely on top of the sand.

The second is not so good when your ball is buried in the sand.

To get out of each type of lie demands a different kind of shot to get out of the bunker.

If your lie is good you can use the so called “splash shot”. Your goal is to contact the sand before the ball; it is the displacement of sand that lifts the ball into the air. Don’t try to “pick” the ball off the sand.

1) Position the ball forward in your stance.

2) Open the club face and then take your grip.

3) Open your stance until the club face aims to the target, keeping the butt of the club on the centre line of your body.

4) Stand further away from the ball and dig your feet into the sand to lower the bottom of your swing arc.

5) Make sure that your head is directly between your shoulders, not on a tilt.

6) Swing down your shoulder line and keep your weight on your left side throughout your swing.

If your lie is bad you can use the “blast shot”. Since the ball is buried below the surface, you want your club to make a deep cut in to the sand to dig the ball out.

1) Position the ball back in your stance.

2) Close the club face until it is square with the target.

3) Using a combination of arms and hands strike a descending blow just behind the ball without trying to follow through.

4) Allow for hardly any back spin, a lower flight through the air but more roll.
